Toyota Yaris Gas Mileage

The sub-compact Toyota Yaris delivers very good gas mileage, an entry-level price, and a whole lot of personality. On the highway, the Yaris scores highway gas mileage figures in the mid-thirty mile per gallon (MPG) range, with a city rating of 29 MPG.

The 2010 Yaris is available as both a four-door sedan (for the more sedate) a three door liftback (for the more daring), and a five-door liftback (added in the 2009 model year). The Yaris Liftback S (shown above) and Sedan S (shown below) add a bit of sporting demeanor, with front and rear under-bumper spolers, side rocker panels, larger (15-inch) wheels, and a sound-system that features the all-important MP3 player jack.

The 2008 Toyota Yaris is fitted with a 1.5 liter DOHC four cylinder engine producing 106 horsepower (HP) and 103 foot pounds of torque. The Yaris is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission as standard equipment; a four-speed electronically controlled automatic with overdrive is available as an option.

Note: the EPA tweaked their testing procedure, starting with the 2008 model year, with the end result being that the 2008 MPG estimates are now lower than previous years. As always, YMMV.

  1. @WKDC – While a quality oil filter and air filter are always a good idea, you shouldn’t expect to see a boost in mileage. Stick with the name brands.

    Switching to a synthetic engine oil may help a bit, but only by a few percentage points. You might also want to consider low-rolling-resistance tires when your current tires are due for replacement.

  2. I recently purchased a 2010 Toyota Yaris Sedan Automatic, I’m very pleased with it. I’m getting between 38 to 40 MPG in mostly city driving. I’m going to install headers dual exhaust shoud improve MPG and Horsepower.
    I love my Yaris Sedan, has a lot of power for a small engine, and has more room then my daughters Ford
    Focus which is a good car also but not as confy .

  3. I bought a 2009 Yaris Sedan with 15″ tires and manual 5 speed. I get better mileage in town (45mph normally) than I can get at highway speeds around 70. I usually get around 40mph highway. I have gotten 55 MPG at 55MPH. I’m wondering whether the 2008 car tested here was an auto or a stick??? Can’t believe you didn’t tell us Daniel! I use a ScanguageII to measure my milage while driving. I am planning on increasing the tire diameter to get better hiway mileage. It is running 3050rpm at 70 which should be more like 2600 as on the Honda fit. Has anybody tried bigger tires? I would like to get 195-75-15’s but I can’t find any and I don’t want to go wider.

  4. @Greg – The 2008 Yaris sedan we tested was equipped with an automatic transmission. Thanks for the heads up on that one … I’ve added that to the written review.

    Your car has 185/60-15 tires now? I’m not sure about switching tire sizes to lower highway RPMs, but you can always swap into a more fuel-efficient low-rolling-resistance tire at the OEM size. TireRack lists the Pirelli P6 Four Seasons, Continental ProContact with EcoPlus, Kumho eco Solus, and Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max all-season tires, along with the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 for winter use. A nice set of lightweight Enkei alloy wheels might not hurt (other than your wallet). 🙂

  5. I WENT FROM VEGAS TO CAL. AND BACK, 578 MILES, 70 TO 75MPH I GOT 41.9 MPG IN A 07 YARIS AUTO. NEXT TIME I WILL TRY 55MPH FROM VEGAS TO HENDERSON ABOUT 44 MILES ROUND TRIP, WILL FILL UP BEFORE I START AND FILL UP AFTER I RETURN,TO SEE WHAT I GET.

  6. My mother in law got her 2012 yaris about 4 months ago and she loves it. She was getting about 33mpg and her 5,000 mile oil change had come up for the break in period. About a week after she says her gas mileage has dropped 10 mpg. Found out she had been driving in 3rd on the highway that whole 5,000 miles. She’s been driving in right gear since but still is only getting 21 mpg, dealer said it was fine. Any chance she damaged something enough to cause it??
