The Volkswagen EOS wins the MPGomatic “Wow, What’s That?” Award for the stealthiest fuel-efficient car on the market. The 2008 VW EOS delivers decent gas mileage, landing a rating of 30 miles per gallon (MPG) on the highway. And not only that … its a convertible with a super slick retracting solid roof. You’ll never call the EOS a ragtop. … and your friends might never know it’s a Volkswagen. (Hint: shave those emblems.)
The EOS is available with two distinctly different engines:
- 3.2 liter naturally aspirated VR6 engine, producing 250 HP and 236 foot pound of torque, mated to an automatic transmission. 0-60 times of 6.9 seconds.
2.0 liter turbocharged and intercooled DOHC four cylinder engine, producing 200 horsepower (HP) and 207 foot pounds of torque, mated to a six-speed manual or Triptronic transmission. 0-60 in 7.4 seconds.
30 MPGs, German engineering, the joy of driving a convertible, sweet acceleration figures, and a handsome profile … what else could you ask for? Off the top of our heads, just one thing … the high-MPG 2.0 liter TDI turbo diesel that’s available in the European EOS (but not yet in the States).

Note: the EPA tweaked their testing procedure, starting with the 2008 model year, with the end result being that the 2008 MPG estimates are now lower than previous years. As always, YMMV.
