Since its introduction in the 2001 model year, the Toyota Prius’ gas mileage ratings have consistently placed it among the most fuel-efficient vehicles sold in America. Although the Prius was not the first, nor most thrifty hybrid – that honor having been held by the (gone but not forgotten) Honda Insight – the Prius has endeared itself to over a million owners. As of this writing, the Prius holds the US gas mileage crown.
But for many, it’s more than just the great gas mileage. The green aura surrounding the Prius is unequaled.
Although the Prius’ gas mileage ratings took a jump with the introduction of the second generation (2004 model year) the numbers plateaued over the following years. The drop in the official gas mileage numbers in the 2008 model year, was due to major tweaks in the Fed’s testing procedures, and was not caused by any mechanical changes.
The Prius achieves its best mileage in-town, when driving in electric mode. The more battery power on board, the longer you can drive without burning gasoline. This is where the opportunity can be found. Hot rodding the Prius will bring significant savings in fuel, with modified Prius capable of achieving the equivalent of over 100 miles per gallon (MPG) when fitted with a plug-in conversion kit. Toyota is working on a factory plug-in Prius, but the release date has yet to be announced.
We spent a week with a 2008 Prius as well as a 2010 Prius and have gained a solid understanding of the car’s capabilities. Check out our 2008 Toyota Prius review:
