What's My MPG?

Calculating your car or truck's miles per gallon (MPG) isn't all that difficult. The equation is miles driven divided by the number of gallons used.

So how do you figure it out?

  1. Fill up your tank, reset the odometer to "O" and drive as you normally would.
  2. The next time you pull up to the service station to fill up your tank, take note of the miles shown on the trip odometer. Write down the mileage, then reset it again.
  3. After your tank is filled, take a look at the pump to see exactly how many gallons were pumped into the tank. Write down the number of gallons, including the decimal.
  4. Use this handy calculator to determine your present car's actual gas mileage. Just plug in the miles traveled, number of gallons, cost, and the number of days between fill-ups (an estimate will suffice).
